I have always believed that the core of a nation’s strength is in the education and health of its citizens. When you have a country of healthy, educated citizens you have the core of a robust economy. Health care and education should be available to all citizens, but they are not free.
We as a government need to monitor the costs and areas of savings that enable us to extend those privileges to all citizens. The undermining issues that stop us from doing this include money wasted on superficial facades, malpractice and other insurance claims, as well as the unreasonable costs of medications. Public hospitals and schools exist to provide the necessary services to the citizens with the best equipment and professionals they can provide. They do not have to look like palaces.
Changing how medical malpractice claims are handled needs to be addressed. We should follow the examples of other countries that don’t allow ridiculous settlements than enhance legal firms more than the lives of the affected.
And I would support any legislation proposed by our President concerning lowering the price of drugs.
The most important people in this country are not top executives, political leaders or inventors, but our teachers. It is from their work and nurturing that individuals of society learn and grow into productive, motivated citizens. But we, as a country have defaulted on this effort. We’ve removed ‘life skills’ from the curriculum: metal shop, wood shop, auto mechanics, home economics, etc. are no longer part of the curriculum.
Students today graduate with few of the basic skills needed just to survive. We spend more money per student than any other country in the world, yet, the US ranks around 24th in the world in student aptitudes for science, mathematics and reading comprehension.
So what’s the problem?
We can all agree that teachers are grossly underpaid. Paying them better may help get more qualified devoted teachers, but that in itself will not solve the problem. The real problem is three fold:
- Lack of discipline and structure in the educational system.
- Failure to provide education in life skills.
- Lack of parental sharing in the education system.
I will advocate for more local and Federal funding for our public educational system and support for Charter Schools, as well as promote changes at the county, city, district level. Private schools and charter schools produce a greater percentage of graduates with higher aptitudes. There is likely to be something learned from them than can be used in public schools.
Social Security is an Entitlement. We pay into these accounts during our working years, and we are ‘entitled’ to have that money returned after retirement.
Welfare programs are not entitlement programs. They are “government assistance programs,” and should be referred to as such. Some are worthwhile, such as those that support citizens who are unable to work due to disabilities. Giving OUR money away to citizens who will not work are NOT to be called entitlements.
There are also specific funds that work ‘like’ entitlements such as unemployment and Medicaid which are NOT funded by the government. They are funded by YOU, I and our employers.
But back to the Social Security Trust Fund (SSTF)… which was created as just that, a Trust Fund… not to be used for anything else. Democratic President Lyndon Johnson decided that the government needed the money to pay for a war so he moved the SSTF into the general fund and from then on is was used to pay for things for which it was never intended.
Trillions of OUR dollars have been spent from OUR savings account for complete nonsense by OUR legislators.
It is time for that to end and for the trillions to be put back into the Trust Fund.
And as I said earlier, as a country, we should NEVER provide illegal immigrants with any form of assistance except the ability to maintain their safety until they are returned to the country from whence they came.
The massacres that have happened in the past years are a travesty, but they are NOT caused by guns.
Jim Jones killed 900 people with Kool-Aid but we didn’t ban or put restrictions on Kool-Aid.
Gun deaths are caused by sick/deranged people that have no business being in the possession of a gun…. any gun…
We do need comprehensive background checks…and a waiting period to be sure we’ve checked all the boxes… and Red Flag confiscation…. but prohibiting the sale and ownership of guns is protected by the constitution of the country and will not be altered. We just need to be smarter about it…
Nevada already has a very comprehensive background check. In fact, I was once denied a purchase of hand gun. Why? I had an outstanding parking ticket from 10 years ago that had gone to a warrant. Lucky for me I found that out at the gun store, not by being stopped for a traffic infraction and ending up in jail!
There is one glaring thing missing in the purchase of firearms, though. There is NO background check or checks of any kind on personal sales or transfers of firearms. So I am also in favor of comprehensive background checks AND a 5 day waiting period before taking possession of a fire arm through any sales method.
Southern Nevada can lead the way in showing America how to make win-win compromises.
- Comprehensive background checks for all firearm transfers with a minimum 24 hour waiting period and a maximum of 72 hours.
- Whether by retail sales, personal sales or gifts. All transfers are to be made through licensed firearms dealers. Dealers may charge up to $50 for the transfer including background checks.
- Owners of firearms used in illegal acts will be legally responsible for those acts.
- Firearms may not be possessed by those having been arrested for abuse, convicted of any felony, deemed to be mentally unstable, or especially anyone using drugs for the purpose of mental stability.
- Sales or transfers of magazines in excess of 20 rounds are illegal
On Assault Weapons
Any mass shooting is a tragedy. The loss of life is never something to just pass by, especially by such senseless and barbaric means. However, the do-nothing Demoncrats pass the blame onto Assault Weapons rather than on the perpetrator.
Guns don’t fire – any gun – without a human being pulling the trigger.
In the last 20 years, less than 600 people have been killed by Assault Weapons. Yes, that’s a lot. But consider that during the same period, over 1800 people were killed in knife attacks. Using the same logic, we should confiscate knives.
A good deal of recent mass shootings have had a secondary factor involved: namely a psychiatric drug connection. This is why Red Flag laws are welcome as a deterrent so long as the effected individual has the right, after a specified period of time, to petition the court to have them returned.
Unless you are an indigenous person, all of us are immigrants or the descendants of immigrants. This country was built by immigrants. Our strength and vitality comes from immigration: LEGAL immigration.
Democrats would like you to think that being against “illegal” immigration by way of taking a stance supported by our laws makes you a Racist, Bigot and White Supremacist. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Fortunately, we have a growing economy and there should be a more expedient means of immigrating to our country LEGALLY. But giving sanctuary, free money, medical care and the right to vote to those who are not citizens AND have crossed our border illegally needs to end immediately. That government assistance is coming directly out of YOUR tax payer pocket.
As a country, we should NEVER provide illegal immigrants with any form of assistance except the ability to maintain their safety until they are returned to the country from whence they came.
White Supremacy / Racism / Bigotry
I will not stand for ANY Color Supremacy. I am a proud member of the Republican Party who has historically been the party, and continues to be the party that fights for equal rights for ALL. Racisim and bigotry comes from the minds of sick Democrats and the Main Stream Media (MSM) in order to enforce more Socialist and Fiscal constraints on our law abiding and loving Republic.
Climate Change and Global Warming
Climate change that has existed for millions of years. While C02 is not the only factor that contributes to our climate, I want us all to have a positive impact on our local community and reduce the emissions by supporting electric vehicles (EV), solar power, wind power, nuclear power, geothermal power and other renewable energy sources. In addition, tree-planting can have a dramatic effect on our climate and counteract C02 emissions. Hemp production can also have a positive effect on the climate and provide alternative energy and production sources as well as health benefits.
Did you know that Nevada has more renewable energy per capita than any other state and even some countries? Not many people know this! Let’s get the word out. I want Nevadans to share what we know with the rest of the country and provide leadership in this arena.
Droughts and flooding are also a result of climate change. On behalf of Nevadans, The Colorado River Authority should start thinking about reducing the amount of water that California takes from the Colorado.
California is allocated 55% of the water that runs through our own state and Nevada gets only 5%. This was done some 70 years ago when Southern Nevada was just a stop in the desert and is currently grossly outdated, plus, it does not help the broader and wider climate issues for all of us. I propose to give California 8 years to get desalination (RO process and thermal) plants up and running allowing Nevada to use more of the water and to re-build our reserves and serve our growing communities.
